Fat FIRE

Fat FIRE is a variant of the FIRE movement where individuals retire early while maintaining a generous, comfortable, or even affluent lifestyle — typically defined as annual retirement spending above $100,000 per year. The FIRE number for Fat FIRE is typically $2,500,000 or higher.

Fat FIRE practitioners are usually high earners (doctors, lawyers, tech executives, entrepreneurs) who have built significant wealth and refuse to compromise their lifestyle in retirement. Fat FIRE retirements typically include regular travel, dining out, premium healthcare, supporting adult children, and expensive hobbies.

The primary advantage is maintaining or improving quality of life in retirement without financial anxiety. The primary challenge is that achieving a $2.5M-$5M+ portfolio requires either very high income, a long accumulation period, or both. Fat FIRE typically takes longer to achieve than Lean or Regular FIRE.
